Rapides Regional Medical Center is home to five residency programs and hosts virtual classes and clinicals for a nurse anesthetist program, earning RRMC the distinction of being a Teaching Hospital.

A teaching hospital is affiliated with a medical school and teaches medical students, resident physicians and other students in the medical field. The residency programs at RRMC are in family practice, obstetrics and gynecology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, ophthalmology and general surgery. Here is more about each of these programs:

The LSU Health Shreveport Family Medicine Residency program is the oldest of the residencies at RRMC, opening in 1997. This three-year program falls under the LSU Health Shreveport School of Medicine and features 18 residents, six in each year of the program. It has graduated 137 physicians, with 70 percent remaining in Louisiana to practice medicine.

The LSU Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic opened in 2015 and is part of the LSU Health Shreveport School of Medicine. It is staffed by a dedicated attending professor/surgeon and rotating residents two days per week. This program is part of the HP Long Clinics that provide access to health care services to uninsured and underinsured in Central Louisiana.

The Tulane Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic opened in 2015 and is part of the Tulane University School of Medicine. RRMC is one of four rotation sites for the Tulane Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology. It is staffed by two attending physicians and a rotation of residents. This program is part of the HP Long Clinics that provide access to health care services to uninsured and underinsured in Central Louisiana.

The Tulane Ophthalmology Clinic opened in 2015 and is part of the Tulane University School of Medicine. RRMC is one of six Tulane-affiliated hospitals that offer ophthalmology residency training. Tulane has five residents in each class of its three-year program, and the residents rotate through its residency hospitals. This program is part of the HP Long Clinics that provide access to health care services to uninsured and underinsured in Central Louisiana.

The Tulane General Surgery Residency began in 2019 and is part of the Tulane University School of Medicine. RRMC is one of 10 hospitals affiliated with Tulane, and the only one outside the New Orleans metro area. Residents rotate through every four weeks and are proctored by surgeons with Rapides Surgical Specialists.

The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) at the University of Louisiana at Monroe sends a cohort of third-year medical students to rotate with specific specialty members of the RRMC Medical Staff as part of their learning experience. VCOM opened its medical school in Monroe in 2020 and Rapides Regional Medical Center received its first group of students in 2022.

To help meet the growing demand for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Rapides Regional Medical Center has partnered with Northwestern State University’s Nurse Anesthesia Program. Nurses in the program attend classes through live-streaming and then do clinicals in the surgery department.
